With momentum in their favour, the Pioneers' bats remained hot as they added a pair of runs in the fifth inning and five in the seventh to put the game on ice.
Alex Bruce led the onslaught with three hits, including a home run and four RBIs. John Bell collected two hits, including a home run, while Jeff Fox and Jesse Dynes also had a pair of hits apiece. Colin Maybee and Mike Lloyd each had one hit.

Mark Petrou August 13, 2009
W 10-2 vs Leaside Leafs

Mark Petrou collected three hits while Jeff Fox and Drew Roberts each contributed two hits and Colin Maybee had one hit and three RBIs to propel the Markham Pioneers to a 10-2 pasting of the Leaside Leafs in Greater Toronto Baseball League action in Leaside Thursday.
Facing a team that were finalists at the recent provincial eliminations, the Pioneers began their assault by in the third inning by scoring a pair of runs and followed that with one in the fourth, two in the fifth and five in the sixth.
Jesse Dynes, Reg Sarne and Mecky Paradys also stroked out one hit apiece for the Pioneers.
Paul Hadfield pitched five strong innings and struck out six batters for the win. Mike Lee pitched two innings of relief.

Pioneers Lose in Hap Walters Semi’s

Alex Bruce July 18, 2009
Game 1 vs Etobicoke Rangers

The Pioneers started out strong in their opening round game of the annual Hap Walters Tournament in St. Catherines, jumping out to a three run lead thanks to a lead off single by Thomas Biskup, a run scoring double by Mark Petrou, a single from Alex Bruce, and a sac fly by Jesse Dynesl. But the long lay off between innings might have had an effect on starter Mark Cheeseman, as he surrendered three runs in the top of the second. That score would remain until the bottom of the sixth inning when the Pioneers added a couple of insurance runs. Alex Bruce would come on in the seventh to close the game, the Rangers would get one run back in the top of the seventh but then the comeback ended on a pop up to shortstop Jason Graham. Up next was a familiar foe in the Whitby Canadians.

Steve Anderson July 18, 2009
Game 2 vs Whitby Canadians

The Pioneers started off hot in another game, jumping out to an early 2-0 lead courtesy of a 2 run home run to centre from first baseman Jesse Dynes. The benefit of the early lead was Pioneers starter Kyle Lawrence (the Pioneers rookie was making his first start of the season). Kyle was in command for the first three innings as the only base runners allowed were as a result of a couple of errors. In the top of the fourth the Pioneers added to their lead when Steve Anderson hit a towering home run to centre field, to put the Pioneers up 3-0. But the Canadians came right back scoring 3 runs on four hits and a walk, Pioneers starter Kyle Lawrence was relieved by Daryl Noble with runners on first & third. Daryl dug deep and got a big strikeout ending the rally and sending the game tied into the fifth inning. The Pioneers offense then proceeded to stall for the next three innings, fortunately Daryl Noble pitched 2 more shutout innings before being relieved by Alex Bruce who closed out the 7th inning and sending the game into extra innings. In the top of the eighth inning Mecky Paradys led off with a walk and later came in to score the go ahead run. The one run was all that was needed as Alex Bruce closed out the game leaving runners on first and second. Next up was another big game against the Oshawa Royals.

Steve Horsley July 18, 2009
Game 3 vs Oshawa Royals

Once again the Pioneers offense would start off the game, but this time they were shut out in the top of the first. So Pioneers starter Steve Horsley did not have the same benefit as the previous two Pioneer starters which was starting the game off with the lead. The Royals responded by scoring one run in the bottom of the first without a hit. So the Pioneers had to fight back for the first time in the tournament. It took another inning, but the offense erupted in the 3rd & 4th innings scoring 7 runs, taking a 7 to 1 lead.  The offensive damage was done by: Jesse Dynes (2 hits & 3 RBI’s) & Drew Roberts (2 hits and 2 RBI’s).  Steve Horsley who had shut the Royals down since the first inning continued to do so until the sixth inning when the Royals got one run back. But the Pioneers scored another run to restore the six run lead thanks to an RBI single by Jesse Dynes (his fourth of the game). So all that was needed to move on in the tournament was three outs, in the bottom of the seventh. But two errors followed by some wildness by Steve Horsley and the Royals scored three runs, causing the Pioneers to turn to Steve Anderson to close out the game. Another Pioneer error left the tying run at the plate. Steve eventually got the last batter of the game, resulting in the Pioneers going 3-0 in round robin play and forced to wait & see who their semi-final opponent would be.

Thomas Bisckup July 18, 2009
Semi Finals vs Windsar Stars

The semi-finals was all about pitching, unfortunately for the Pioneers Steve Anderson started the game but only lasted 2 batters before being taken out because of an injury. So Brad Binns was called upon to get control of the game for the Pioneers as the Stars had jumped out to an early 1-0 lead. Brad got out of the first only giving up another run and leaving the bases loaded, but once again the Pioneers would have to fight back. Jesse Dynes started off the 2nd with a blast to left that almost left the yard but Jesse had to settle with a double. But the Pioneers could not knock in Jesse from 2nd, wasting a big chance to get on the board. In the top of the third, Thomas Biskup continued his hot hitting leading off with a double to left centre. He would eventually come around to score on a Stars error, then the Pioneers had first & third with 2 outs but could not get the big hit. Brad Binns pitched very well, getting out of trouble in the 4th & 5th innings before the Stars struck again in the bottom of the sixth. The Stars added 2 more runs via 2 singles, a walk, and a stolen base. That left the Pioneers a big mountain to climb against a Windsor pitcher that had only surrendered two hits through six innings. Jason Graham led off with a single to right, but that was all the Pioneers would get thus ending their run to the championship game. The Windsor Stars would go on to win the Hap Walters tournament against the home town St. Catherine’s Metros. The Pioneers next action will be Thursday July 23rd as they travel to Leaside to take on the Leafs.

another 4 in a row

Jesse Dynes July 3, 2009
W 7-5 vs Leaside Leafs

The Leaside Leafs came to Milliken Friday night coming off a big win against Oshawa a day earlier.  When the game finally ended the Pioneers got their 4th win in a row with a 7 to 5 victory. Although the score would not indicate a very well pitched game, with both teams receiving very good pitching. On the mound for the start for the Pioneers was Orville Ivey, the staff veteran pitched two innings and gave up 2 unearned runs in the first. Steve Anderson took over from Orville to pitch three innings, giving up 3 runs over that time to earn the win. Jason Graham took over from Steve and pitched the final three innings recording the save. Offensively all the Pioneers needed was a six run outburst in the 3rd inning, which was hi-lighted by a bases clearing double by Jesse Dynes. Also helping out the offense was Mike “Pudge” Rodriguez as he added a run scoring single, also in the sixth. John Bell helped add some insurance in the 7th by leading off the inning with a double to right, he was replaced by pinch runner Brad Binns who later scored the Pioneers 7th run. The Pioneers now enjoy a mini vacation from baseball as they do not play until July 9th, when the Newmarket Hawks come into town. The Pioneers will be looking for a little revenge as the Hawks are only one of three teams to beat the Pioneers this season.

Bell Tolls on Bulldogs

John Bell June 26, 2009
W 6-5 vs East York Bulldogs

The East York Bulldogs came to Milliken on Friday to take on the Pioneers with hopes of handing the Pioneers their first loss at home. The Pioneers sent Steve Horsley to the mound to take on the Bulldogs.  The Dogs drew first blood in the top of the 2nd with a solo home run, but the Pioneers responded with 3 runs in the bottom of the 2nd, thanks to a couple of hits from Reggie Sarne and Jason Graham. The two run lead stood until the top of the 4th inning when the Bulldogs tied the game with a two run home run this time. That scored stood until the bottom of the sixth inning when John Bell hit a towering 3 run home run to right for his first of the year. The Bulldogs tried to mount a comeback off of Pioneers pitcher Mike Lee (who relieved Steve Horsley to start the sixth) but they fell one run short as Brad Binns came on to relieve Mike in the top of the eighth inning to finish out the game for the save. Offensively the Pioneers were led by John Bell (3 for 4 with a 3 run home run) and Jason Graham (3 for 4 with 2 singles & a double, with an RBI).

Anderson propels pioneers
to shutout

Steve Anderson June 25, 2009
W 4-0 vs Martingrove White Sox

Steve Anderson tossed five innings of shutout ball and fanned six batters while Darryl Noble and Alex Bruce provided stellar relief support to propel the Markham Pioneers to a 4-0 road win over the Martingrove White Sox in Greater Toronto Baseball League action Thursday.
The Pioneers scored three runs in the second inning and one in the third to account for their offensive output.
Jeff Fox had a hit and two RBIs while Steve Horsley and Jason Graham each collected a hit and one RBI. Bruce and Mark Petrou each had hit and scored one run. Jesse Dynes also had one hit.

Another cheeseman jem

Mark Cheeseman June 23, 2009
W 2-1 vs Oshawa Royals

Mark Cheeseman tossed a two-hitter through seven innings and struck out five batters while Mecky Paradys and Alex Bruce each drove in a run in the third inning to propel the Markham Pioneers to their first victory of the season over the first-place Oshawa Royals with a 2-1 decision in Greater Toronto Baseball League action at Milliken Park Tuesday.
Cheeseman carried a perfect game through 5 2/3 innings before surrendering his first hit in the seventh.
Bruce relieved Cheeseman in the eighth inning and recorded the save.
The victory improved the Pioneers’ record to 8-3-2 and atoned for a 10-3 loss they suffered at the hands of the Royals last Friday in Oshawa. In that game, Jesse Dynes, Thomas Biskup, Bruce and Jeff Fox each had one hit.

Pioneers Finish 4 & 1
@ Oshawa Tournament

Steve Anderson June 12, 2009
Game 1 vs Whitby Canadians
Brad Binns took the mound for the Pioneers in game one and pitched five & 2/3 innings of four hit ball. He held the Canadians to two runs over that time before giving way to Alex Bruce who closed out the game for another save, although Bruce did give up an unearned run. The scoring for the Pioneers was done in two innings, the bottom of the 1st produced two runs when Jeff Fox & Mark Petrou led off with walks and both came around to scored (Fox on a single by Jesse Dynes and Petrou on a fielder’s choice by Steve Anderson) and the fourth inning when Drew Roberts singled and then was followed by Steve Anderson 2 run home run to left. In total the Pioneers got seven hits over their six innings led by Jesse Dynes (2 hits & 1 RBI) and Steve Anderson (1 HR & 3 RBI’s).  Next up for the Pioneers were the Erindale Cardinals.

Steve Horsley June 13, 2009
Game 2 vs Erindale Cardinals
The only thing you need to know about this game is that pitching dominated it; Steve Horsley took the mound for the Pioneers and pitched a gem. After seven innings Steve came away with a win by pitching seven innings of four hit ball, he only allowed three more hitters then the minimum for the game.  Steve was in control for the whole game (9 strikeouts) and the only offense he would need was a solo home run by Steve Anderson in sixth inning. The Pioneers offense hit a bump in the road as they only had 5 hits for the game, but got the one run they needed. The defense also played a part in the result of the game as the Pioneers double play combo of Jeff Fox and Steve Anderson turned a couple of nice double plays.  Next up was the Tecumseh Thunder.

Jesse Dynes June 13, 2009
Game 3 vs Tecumseh Thunder
The story of this game was the offense that finally looked like it had shook off all of the winter’s rust.  The Pioneers pounded out 10 hits off of 3 Thunder pitchers, including a pair of 2 run home runs by Jesse Dynes & Alex Bruce. The benefactor of the offensive outburst was Steve Anderson; Steve pitched five innings giving up 3 runs on five hits. Steve was picked up by Mike Lee who pitched the final two innings surrendering a two run home run in the seventh inning. Jesse Dynes, Alex Bruce, and Mike “Pudge” Rodriguez accounted for 6 hits and seven RBI’s for the game. Now it was on to the semi-finals versus the Etobicoke Rangers.

Jason Graham June 14, 2009
Semi-Finals vs Etobicoke Rangers

The semi-finals was a see saw battle between the Rangers & Pioneers, that ended in the eighth inning.  Going into the bottom of the seventh inning the Pioneers had a slim one run lead that was erased when the Rangers scored after a lead off double. That lead to another extra inning game for the Pioneers this year (this one would not end in a tie though), it also gave Reggie Sarne another chance for a game winning RBI. Thomas Biskup led off the top of the eighth with a single followed by a one out single by Jason Graham (3rd hit of the game), and Mike “Pudge” Rodriguez got hit by a pitch loading the bases. Reggie Sarne was called upon to pinch hit but this time Reggie did not win the game with his bat. Reggie worked the count to 3-2 and then with his eagle eye took ball four to force in the go ahead run. After that the Rangers got the next two batters out, bringing them to bat in the bottom of the eighth. With Jason Graham on the hill looking to close out the game, the Rangers led off the inning with a single and the runner promptly stole 2nd. Jason retired the next hitter but the base runner advanced to third on a fielder’s choice. On the next pitch the ball got away from Pioneers catcher Mike Rodriguez and the Rangers runner broke for home, fortunately the ball did not stray too far from home as Pudge retrieved the ball and threw to Jason Graham covering home to get the runner before he crossed the plate. Pitching wise the quartet of Mark Cheeseman, Daryl Noble, Alex Bruce, and Jason Graham held the Rangers to three runs over eight innings. Offensively the Pioneers were led by Jesse Dynes & Jason Graham both with three hits each. The Pioneers would now have to wait to see who they would play in the finals, Oshawa ended up beating Leaside to set up an Oshawa vs. Markham final.

Paul Hadfield June 14, 2009
Finals vs Oshawa Royals
For the finals the Pioneers handed the ball to Paul Hadfield. The Pioneers got off to a good start cashing 2 runs in the bottom of the first inning courtesy of a Mark Petrou single, Drew Roberts double, and an RBI single by Jesse Dynes. Then Hadfield went to work, he held the Royals off the score sheet for five innings before running into trouble in the top of the sixth. Hadfield left the game after surrendering two runs and leaving a runner at 2nd, Jason Graham came in to try to stop Oshawa’s attack but gave up a single that scored another run giving Oshawa a 3-2 lead. From there Oshawa’s pitching shut down the Pioneers over their last two at bats and tacked on another run in the top of the seventh. Overall the Pioneers had a great weekend facing some of the top teams in Ontario, they had great pitching (15 runs against in five games), offensively they have come out of an early season slump, and they played well under pressure with four of their games being decided by 1 run.  Hopefully this weekend’s success carries over into this week’s league play where the Pioneers will be on the road Thursday versus Leaside and returning to Oshawa on Friday for a rematch with the Royals.

Pioneers Win 4th In A Row

June 8, 2009 - It was a soggy night but the Pioneers travelled to East York to take on the Bulldogs.  The Pioneers sent Steve Horsley to the mound for his first appearance of the year and the long lay off showed.  Steve threw close to 50 pitches in the first inning, an inning that included five walks in a row. But after surviving the first Steve settled down and went on to pitch three more innings giving up 4 hits and 6 runs (the only runs East York would get on the night).  Steve was picked up by Daryl Noble in the fifth and after three shutout innings, Noble picked up the win. Alex Bruce closed out the game with a 1-2-3 8th inning, collecting another save. Offensively the Pioneers knocked out only six hits but took advantage of East York walking 9 Pioneer hitters. Steve Anderson continued his hot streak with another home run, a 2-run shot to centre. Jason Graham chipped in with 2 doubles, while Mike Rodriguez and Reggie Sarne each had singles to round out the attack for the Pioneers.  Defensively the Pioneers once again were solid, Matt Wagner threw out an runner trying to tag from third. The Pioneers now have a few days off to rest themselves for the weekend.  This weekend they will be travelling to Oshawa for the third annual Oshawa Royals tournament. The Pioneers will take on old rivals Whitby Canadians on Friday, followed by games Saturday against the Erindale Cardinals and the Tecumseh Thunder.  The semi-finals and finals will be played on Sunday.

sarne ends it in style

Reg SarneJune 6, 2009 - The Pioneers had one day off to rest before returning to Milliken to face the Leaside Leafs. The Pioneers showed a little fatigue early in the game but managed to take an early 3-1 lead for starter Jason Graham compliments of three hits and a couple of errors. But the Leafs would score a couple more off Graham before he left the game after 6 innings of work. That would set the stage for another Pioneers extra inning game as Mike Lee replaced Graham for the top of the seventh and pitched 4 almost perfect innings of relief, giving the Pioneers a chance to win the game in the bottom of the tenth. That is when the hot hitting Reg Sarne led off with a towering blast to left-centre field for a game winning walk off home run, needless to say that Reg was mobbed by his team mates at home plate. Outside of get pitching from Graham and Lee, the Pioneer offense started to show signs of really hitting their stride. Leading the 11 hit attack was Jesse Dynes with another 2 hits, followed by Alex Bruce and John Bell both with two hits and Reg Sarne led the way almost hitting for the cycle.

Pioneers End Busy Week 3 & 1

Jesse DynesJune 2, 2009 - The Pioneers started a busy week of baseball by travelling to Newmarket to take on the Hawks. The game would be another extra inning affair but this time the game did not result in a tie, Newmarket scored a run in the bottom of the 10th giving Daryl Noble the loss.  Paul Hadfield (4 innings 1 run) and Alex Bruce (5 innings 2 runs) also saw the bump for the Pioneers.  Offensively the Pioneers had a tough time getting going against the Newmarket trio of pitcher’s resulting in only six hits, Jesse Dynes continued to swing well banging out another 2 hits as did veteran Reg Sarne.

June 3, 2009 - The next night the team travelled to Thornhill to take on the original Reds and hoping to exact some revenge for an earlier loss in the season. The game started with the Pioneers getting 2 runs in the top of the first courtesy of a Drew Roberts solo blast and an RBI double by Alex Bruce. By Pioneers starter Brad Binns felt generous and gave the Reds back their two runs in the bottom half of the inning. The Pioneers would build up an 8 to 2 lead over the next five innings compliments of the free pass (four walk’s came around to score) and a Steve Anderson home run (Welcome back Steve!). The Reds tried to comeback with 4 runs in the seventh but Mike Lee escaped with a two run lead intact, and then gave the ball to Jason Graham who shut the door on the Reds by pitching a 1-2-3 8th before the game’s time limit expired. The game also had a hi-light play when shortstop Steve Anderson slide straight back to catch a pop up in no man’s land and then proceeded to throw a strike to 1st to double of the Red’s wandering base runner.

June 4, 2009 - After two games on the road the Pioneers came back to Milliken on Thursday night for a game versus the Martingrove White Sox. The game started out as a pitcher’s duel with Steve Anderson giving up an unearned run and striking out 10 over four innings, only to be matched by the Sox starting pitcher who gave up one hit over four innings. But both pitchers were gone after four, Steve Anderson because of it being his first start of the season and the Sox pitcher because of injury. After that the Pioneers scored 8 runs in the next four innings highlighted by 2 run RBI double by Steve Horsley. Daryl Noble took the mound after Steve Anderson and did a great job, only allowing one hit over the final four innings. The game was called after the Pioneers counted their 8th run in the bottom of the eight as they were leading by 7. Steve Horsley had 2 of the Pioneers 8 hits, other notable hits were Mike Lloyd’s lead-off double in the 7th and Mecky Paradys double in the fifth inning that got the offense going.

Pitcher’s Duel Ends in a Tie

Mark CheesemanMay 29, 2009 - The Oshawa Royals came to Milliken Park on Friday May 29th in a game that pitted the top two teams in the GTBL. The game was a good old fashion pitcher’s duel as the Royals quartet of pitchers only gave up 1 run on 3 hits and the Pioneer’s tandem of Brad Binns (5 innings 1 run and 2 hits) and Mark Cheeseman (5 innings of no hit ball) held the Royals in check all game.  The Pioneers offense was led by Jesse Dynes, as he knocked in the tying run in the 6th inning and managed 2 of the 3 Pioneers hits (the other by Jason Graham).  It was a game that had great pitching and defense from both teams; it was just too bad that the game had to end in a tie because of time limit. The Pioneers next action is on Tuesday June 2nd as they travel to Newmarket to take on the Hawks.

Pioneers unbeaten in three

Mark PetrouMay 23, 2009 - The Markham Pioneers extended their unbeaten streak to three games after recording a tie and victory in Greater Toronto Baseball League action. Playing host to the Martingrove White Sox, the Pioneers overcame a 5-0 deficit through 3 1/2 innings to salvage a 7-7 curfew-ending tie at Milliken Mills Park last Friday. Pioneers' outfielder Mark Petrou ignited the offence with two hits and three RBIs while Mecky Paradys had two hits, Alex Bruce and Drew Roberts one hit and one RBI and Jeff Fox one hit and two runs scored. Starting pitcher Orville Ivey went 3 1/3 innings for the Pioneers before giving way to Mark Cheeseman, who tossed 3 2/3 frames. Alex Bruce came into pitch the eighth inning and held the White Sox scoreless before the game was called.

The following day, the Pioneers played host to the Thornhill Reds B and emerged with a 3-2 victory. The Pioneers put the first run on the board in the third inning when Jeff Fox singled home Steve Horsley. After Thornhill countered to tie the game in their half of the fourth inning, the Pioneers broke the deadlock in the seventh inning when catcher Mike Rodriguez drew a walk. Horsley then bunted Rodriguez to second base. Rodriguez later scored when on a throwing error. The Pioneers scored their third run in the eighth inning when Reg Sarne hit a run-scoring double. Jason Graham was the winning pitcher in relief of starter Brad Binns.

Pioneer bats come to life

May 19, 2009 - Brad Binns belted four doubles and drove in seven runs while Thomas Biskup had four hits, scored two runs and drove in a pair to propel the Markham Pioneers to an 18-6 win over the Thornhill Reds 2 in Greater Toronto Baseball League action at Bishop's Cross Park in Thornhill Tuesday.
Drew Roberts started the Pioneers' uprising in the first inning when he smacked a three-run homer. Jesse Dynes chipped in with three hits, scored two runs and drove in two while Matt Wagner also had three hits. Colin Maybee had one hit, scored three runs and drove in a run and Rick Dwinnell one hit.
Paul Hadfield started the game with Alex Bruce getting the win in relief.

Pioneers strong in debut

May 14, 2009 - For the Markham Pioneers, their long-awaited debut in the Greater Toronto Baseball League turned out to be a successful one as they defeated the Thornhill Reds 6-4 at Milliken Park Tuesday.
Trailing 1-0 entering the bottom of the second inning, the Pioneers' bats came to life as they erupted for six runs.
Drew Roberts, in his first at-bat with the Pioneers, ignited the rally when he belted a solo homerun. Catcher Mark Petrou drove in a pair of runs with a double and Jason Graham contributed a hit.
After starting pitcher Mark Cheeseman worked the first three innings, Paul Hadfield came in relief and worked the next two frames to earn the win.
Alex Bruce tossed the final two innings to earn the save.

Pioneers release 2009 schedule

With the 2009 season just around the corner, the Markham Pioneers have released their 2009 schedule. The 2009 season will be one of change as the Pioneers make the move to playing in the Greater Toronto Baseball League (GTBL). This move comes after spending over 20 seasons competing in the Eastern Ontario Baseball Association (EOBA). As always, the Pioneers will be heading to Windsor to compete for Provincial gold in the Elimination Tournament. The Pioneers have made some key additions to their 2009 roster to go along with their already solid squad, and will once again be amongst the top rated teams in Ontario Senior mens baseball.

2008 SEASON AWARDS

Mark Petou Offensive Player of the Year
Mark Petrou
In a season requiring change and adaptation, veteran Mark Petrou transitioned smoothly into a corner outfielder while producing numbers at the plate good enough to capture the 2008 Offensive Player of the Year award. Leading the club in home runs with 5 in only 102 at bats, Petrou also knocked in a career high 27 runs while scoring 26 of his own. A true batsman, Petrou finished the year hitting at a .348 clip with 2 triples and was only fooled by pitchers on 10 occasions, 2 shy of his career low. Dependable in the clutch, many of Petrou’s heroics came in pressure situations when his team needed him most making this latest offensive accolade well deserved.

Jeff Fox Defensive Player of the Year
Jeff Fox
Finishing his sophomore season as a second baseman, veteran Jeff Fox collects his 4th “Defensive Player of the Year” award after another stellar showing on the right side of the infield. Fox’s work ethic payed dividends in 2008 as he improved his ability to turn the double-play while maintaining his ability to make strong accurate throws to all bases. Displaying great range to both his left and right, many ground balls headed for the outfield came to rest in Fox’s glove as he accumulated assist after assist to the relief of the pitching staff.

Steve Horsley Pitcher of the Year
Steve Horsley
The transition from thrower to pitcher best describes the evolution of 2008 Pitcher of the Year Steve Horsley. The epitome of a power-righty, Horsley let it be known that he's ready to hold the title of staff ace after several dominating performances in tournament play. His numbers speak for themselves, among them 33 IP, 2.45 ERA, 10.09K/9 INN, plus the respect of his teammates for enforcing "the code" when called upon. When it mattered most, Horsley masterfully shut down the top offensive lineups in the Province and has successfully harnessed his enormous potential.

Mike Rodriguez Co-Most Improved Player of the Year
Mike Rodriguez

A changing of the guard took place in 2008, seeing Mike Rodriguez officially take over the reigns as Markham’s starting catcher. Rodriguez seized the opportunity and never looked back showing a new-found confidence at the plate while continuing to build on his blocking prowess behind the dish. Raising his batting average by over a full point from last season, Rodriguez tied for the team lead in batting average at .368 and showed a consistency not seen before in this, his fourth season in Pioneer green. In doing so, Rodriguez set personal marks in hits, runs, RBI, doubles, triples and multi-hit games. Garnering respect throughout the league as the seasons mount, this co-winner of the “Most Improved Player of the Year” award will be looked upon to maintain his form of 2008 and hopes to continue his progression into the leagues top defensive catcher.

Paul Hadfield Co-Most Improved Player of the Year
Paul Hadfield
Returning to the Pioneer fold after a four year hiatus to heal his arm and spend more time with his family, Paul Hadfield took to the mound once again in 2008 and showed his teammates once again that he could be a big-game pitcher. Seemingly regaining the ability to harness his fastball and locate his curveball, this south-paw turned back the clock to be a valuable contributor to the pitching staff both as a starter and a short-reliever out of the pen. Hadfield’s gutsy performance at the Elimination tournament against Lakeside validated the fact that the fire still burns inside of him making him a worthy co-winner of the 2008 Most Improved Player award.
