For the first time, The Markham Mariners are GTBL league champions. The Mariners entered Sunday’s tournament action 2-1 with wins over Thornhill and Newmarket. The team’s only loss was to the Leaside Leafs, making it necessary for Markham to beat Leaside twice on Sunday in the final. Markham won the first game convincingly 14-4. The team was propelled by a strong pitching performance from hard throwing Steve Anderson who had all of his pitches working on the afternoon. The offense was a balanced attack topped off with a Shane Moore homerun. The victory set up the final game where Steve Horsley took to the hill. He was looking to atone for an uncharacteristic outing Friday night where he gave up 6 runs in the first inning against the slugging Thornhill Reds. Markham mounted a comeback against The Reds, led by Tommy Kempt’s 5 1/3 innings of relief, and eventually won the game. Horsley found his stride pitching a complete game Sunday and led the Mariners to a 4-3 victory and league title. Markham’s other win was against the Newmarket Hawks where Thomas Biskup’s homerun was the only offence the team would need as Alex Bruce pitched a complete game gem needing only 83 pitches for the 2-0 win. The title caps off a strong year for the team who are already looking ahead to spring, and another run at a provincial title.
